How Do Inlet and Outlet Pressure Affect Chemical Pump Selection

Pump inlet and outlet pressures play a critical role in determining the pump type, mechanical seal configuration, and material selection.

1.Impact on Pump Structure

When the pump inlet pressure is relatively high, the axial thrust acting on the rotor increases.

  • Inlet pressure > 2 MPaG: A high-pressure OH2 pump or a BB2 between-bearings pump is typically recommended to withstand the increased axial load.

  • Inlet pressure ≤ 2.0 MPaG: A conventional OH2 pump can generally be selected. However, it is still necessary to verify that the pump casing pressure rating is adequate for the maximum operating pressure at the actual process fluid temperature.

2. Impact on Mechanical Seal Selection

In conventional centrifugal pumps, the mechanical seal is typically located in the seal chamber on the suction side of the impeller. The seal chamber pressure is generally higher than the pump inlet pressure but lower than the discharge pressure.

When the inlet pressure is high, a high-pressure mechanical seal should be selected to ensure reliable sealing performance under the operating conditions.

3. Impact on Material Selection

When the inlet pressure is high, the pump discharge pressure also increases. Therefore, the pressure-bearing capability of the pump casing material at the actual operating temperature must be carefully verified to ensure safe and reliable operation.
